All set for Warriors squad announcement

The much-anticipated Warriors squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Nigeria will be announced tomorrow.

Zimbabwe host Benin at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on March 20 before clashing with the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Uyo, four days later.

Michael Nees’ troops currently anchor Group C, having amassed just two points from their opening four matches.

The Warriors need a miracle to end a 45-year wait for participation at the World Cup finals, as they need to win all their remaining games to entertain any chance of being at the global spectacle to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Captain Marvelous Nakamba has been ruled out by an injury, the same goes for veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi, while England-based midfielder Andy Rinomhota is also doubtful.

It remains to be seen whether Nees will opt for United States-based Tatenda Mkuruva, the in-form Elvis Chipezeze or the tried and tested Donovan Bernard, as Arubi’s replacement.

Brentford’s Marley Tavaziva and MWOS’ Martin Mapisa will also likely be included in the squad.

Scottland’s Khama Billiat and his teammates Walter Musona, Tymon Machope and Godknows Murwira will also likely be drafted, as will Dynamos’ Emmanuel Jalai.

Meanwhile, giant clothing company 4 May International have entered into a partnership with ZIFA to provide formal wear for the Warriors on every international assignment starting with the Benin and Nigeria games.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Harare yesterday, 4 May CEO Elcy Chimedza expressed confidence that the partnership will improve the Warriors brand.

“We would love to have a great partnership with them (ZIFA) and to continue this relationship which we have had and also fly high our Zimbabwean flag. It’s a great honor for a brand to be associated with something national,” Chimedza said.

“It’s just everything to do with pride, they have taken pride in us and we will take pride in them, that is just what this partnership is about,” she added.
