Chido Chizondo wants an action-oriented Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League

The Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League is far from appealing.

Considering how the popularity of women’s football has significantly grown all over the African continent in the last decade, it is clear that the Zimbabwean women’s league is lagging behind.

Lack of sponsorship, lack of equity between female footballers and their male counterparts, are some of the many stumbling blocks to an appealing women’s league in Zimbabwe.

While a catalog of excuses has been used to justify the unattractiveness of the league, Platinum Royals chairperson Chido Chizondo insists the time for being proactive to change that, is now.

Chizondo is contesting for the position of chairperson of the league in the upcoming election.

The watershed pole is slated for this Friday in Harare, and Chizondo will battle with Black Rhinos Queens’ Ntokoziso Moyo for the league’s chairperson position.

Chizondo reckons the league needs a hands-on-the-deck kind of leader, and she is willing to serve in that context.

“As a woman in football in the past 15 years, I have learnt so much. One of my biggest lessons was to become a doer,” Chizondo said on this week’s Fanzone episode.

“There comes a point where complaining is no longer an option, and you need to dig deeper and understand the need to go out there and give it your all to change the narrative for women’s football.

“The women’s league needs a clear strategic direction that aligns with the ZIFA and FIFA mandate. In the absence of that, we will find ourselves chasing our tails.

Chizondo reckons the women’s league can emulate the male Premier Soccer League in many aspects, but for that to happen, patience and commitment are needed.
